On one of my boxes, i started to get some connectivity drops, so wanted a way to monitor and alert me when it happened.

Found a script called watchping which seems nice, installed it and hope it fits my needs, reads hosts from a config file, able to set mail alerts, logs to syslog etc

Found the script on this website: http://www.brendangregg.com/ping_scripts.html

Also included the source for the script if the site above would be down at some point

#!/bin/sh
#
# watchping - daemon to ping servers, take action if down (email/web/log).
#	Stateful, only emails when something changes. Unix.
#
# 25-Jun-2003	ver 1.10
#
# USAGE: watchping [-vhES][-e addr][-s priority][-l logfile][-w website]
# [-t secs][-i infile | hosts ...]
#
# eg, watchping # Ping /etc/hosts hosts, email root.
# watchping -e fred@nurk.com # Email this address instead of root.
# watchping mars phobos # Ping these servers instead.
# watchping -i prod.txt # Read host list from prod.txt.
#	watchping -w hosts.html # Generate website of host status.
#
# By default it pings servers listed in /etc/hosts, and both emails root and
# logs via syslog if a server goes down. The servers to ping can be configured
# in either a text file or arguments, and actions to take are options below.
# It has been written for Solaris and should work elsewhere with
# minor changes.
#
#	-h	Usage help.
#	-v	Verbose info on startup. Use until familiar with options.
#	-e	Email this address. By default it emails root.
#	-E	Don't send email.
#	-t	Seconds to sleep between pings. Default is 60.
#	-s	Use this "facility.priority" for syslog. By default it uses
# the "priority" variable in the script below.
#	-S	Don't send messages to syslog. Default is to use syslog.
#	-w	Web site. Update this website with ping status (coloured).
#	-l	Log file. Append status messages here.
#	hosts	A list of hosts to ping. By default, the list is fetched from
# hosts discovered in /etc/hosts (specified in the "hosts"
# variable in the script).
#	-i	In list file. A text file containing the host list mentioned
# above. Syntax is a list of hostnames and/or IPs. Useful if
# the host list grows to be large.
#
# The four actions are to email alerts, syslog alerts, log everything, and
# generate a website. A combination may be practical. For example, a startup
# script might run,
#
#	watchping -e sysadmin@mars -w /var/http/prod.html -i /etc/prod.txt &
#	watchping -e dbadmin@venus -w /var/http/db.html -i /etc/db.txt &
#
# Both of the above run in the background, check every 60 seconds, and send
# alerts to syslog. They will also email alerts to the address after "-e",
# they read host lists from the text files in /etc after the "-i" (here one
# may list production server names, the other database server names), and
# they even update colour coded websites after the "-w" (red is bad, green is
# good, blue is unknown).

If i knew all the problems it would cause, i would have installed a Linux VM to run it on

Anyway, needed to setup a temporary storage for a win7 migration project, and the SAN with most free space only had a connection to a AIX machine.

Downloaded the Samba packages from the IBM expansion pack and installed them, and of course then didn’t support ADS… so i went for the domain setup, joining the domain worked fine, so did querying the AD for a user list, ntlm_auth etc. Cool! Working!

Eeh.. not really, the package didn’t have ldap support compiled in, local auth against the the AD worked fine, but remote client didn’t work.

So back to the drawing board (Google really), found the pware binary’s, downloaded and installed them, used the old smb.conf from the last install (still domain setup), didn’t get shit from the AD, not even a userlist. Gave it up after googeling all possible unknown error messages and went for the ADS setup instead.

Began to setup Kerberos but ended up with unresolved domain all the time, hm, rechecked the configuration file several times, couldn’t find anything wrong, and checked earlier kinit read the file. After some investigation i found that there was another kinit binary already in the system path, which i mistakenly had used first time, that binary used /etc/krb5/krb5.conf and the one that came with pware is using /etc/krb5.conf, copied the file and tada, it worked!

Joined the domain, changed some minor stuff in smb.conf (realm), all seemed fine, but still couldn’t auth from my client, coffee break!

Fixed it by adding winbind as authentications methods in methods.cfg

Created a new LV and mounted it to my desired directory, wrote a preexec script for my homes share which creates and chmods home dirs for new users connecting, flawless!

Still, next time i’ll connect a FC cable from the SAN to the VMware environment so i can use a regular working Linux installation!

But why on earth does the test include answers with spelling errors, i doubt i would be a bad sysadm if i read a letter wrong in a menu.. its just fucked up, get some real relevant questions instead!

Oh, and the cert is IBM Certified System Administrator – AIX 6.1
